SEM581: Seminars in WOC Nursing - Fall 2024
This seminars course is designed to offer the learner entering the subject area of study with an opportunity to acclimate to the Program. In this course, background information on the specialty, introduction to a course project to be submitted after the practicum is completed, discussion on how the clinical practicum is setup and basic topics in the specialty of WOC Nursing are presented. Interaction and questions from learners is essential to being successful in the remainder of the Program.
Content on role implementation for the WOC specialty nurse history of the specialty, legal and ethical issues pertaining to implementation of the role, and professional growth (i.e., WOCN® Society, certification, research utilization and establishing a service or a clinic) are included.

PURPOSE OF ACTIVITY: |
The purpose of this Activity is to: 1. Provide educational experiences to prepare the bachelor’s prepared nurse (and beyond) to practice as a Skin and Wound Care, Ostomy and/or Continence Nurse Specialist at an entry level in all care settings. 2. Provide access to a curriculum delivered by experienced online educators who are also Board Certified as Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurse Specialists. 3. Increase the number of Skin and Wound Care, Ostomy and/or Continence Nurse Specialists providing specialty care across the health care settings. 4. Provide patients with evidence-based skin and wound care, ostomy care and/or continence care. |
COURSE OBJECTIVES: |
Upon completion of this course, the learner will be able to: 1. Discuss how online learning is facilitated using learning communities, discussions and software designed for content delivery and learner evaluation. 2. Compare and contrast the origins of the WOC nurse role with the current role of the board certified WOC nurse as it relates to scope of practice, role justification, outcomes measurement, professional development, and practice management. 3. Explore the components of a practice development plan for an entry level WOC/Specialty Nurse. 4. Analyze individual clinical practice program objectives to create a project that incorporates role development and staff education. 5. Describe the types of studies that create evidence and the significance of evidence in building a credible, viable practice. 6. Describe how moisture associated skin damage affects the management of patients in each of the three scopes of practice (i.e. wounds, ostomies and continence). |
